Wednesfield Canal Festival wins prestigious Green Apple awards!
We’re proud to announce that the Wednesfield Canal Festival has won two International Green Apple Environment Awards 2025 in recognition of its outstanding environmental achievements.
The event which takes place annually in August was selected from more than 700 global entries. The festival has been honoured as an example of international best practice in environmental responsibility and community engagement.
The Wednesfield Canal Festival celebrates the heritage, wildlife and environment of the Wyrley and Essington Canal. The festival attracts thousands of visitors each year, featuring narrowboats, live music, family activities, community stalls and environmental education. It promotes sustainability and biodiversity while strengthening community pride in the canal network.
The festival is organised in partnership with Wolverhampton City Council, Hands on Wednesfield, Canal & River Trust, Bentley Bridge Leisure Park, The Nickelodeon and a wide range of local volunteers, charities, schools and businesses.
Mark Welsby, Centre Manager at Bentley Bridge Leisure Park, said:
"Winning two International Green Apple Awards is a fantastic recognition of what can be achieved when businesses and communities work together. The Canal Festival is a real celebration of Wednesfield and its environment, and this recognition is something everyone involved should be proud of."
Global recognition
Following this success, the festival has been invited to join the Green World Ambassador programme, which will see the project published in The Green Book, the leading international reference on environmental best practice. This provides an opportunity for the Wednesfield Canal Festival to inspire organisations across the world and to represent the UK in the 2026 Green World Environment Awards.
The Green Apple Environment Awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent non-profit group that has been recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice worldwide since 1994.
